Rise With Purpose

MINDSHIFTERS' Takeaways from Jessica Motaung's Talk at the MANCOSA Jacaranda FM Business Breakfast
At MINDSHIFTERS, we listen for ideas that renew minds, heal communities, and build lives on purpose. Jessica Motaung's keynote offered exactly that: a masterclass in vision-led leadership, community-rooted engagement, and identity that endures through both victory and drought. Below, we reflect on seven themes that stood out—and how they translate into personal growth and healthy, values-driven leadership.
1) Vision births legacy
Great brands and great lives don't happen by accident; they are authored by a clear vision and stewarded by courageous leaders. The Kaiser Chiefs story shows how a compelling "why" can move a club from team to cultural icon. In our inner life, vision functions the same way: it organises choices, fuels resilience, and makes sacrifice meaningful.
"Write the vision; make it plain…" (Habakkuk 2:2)
2) Identity creates belonging (beyond the "90 minutes")
Jessica framed the brand not as 90 minutes of football, but a lived identity that shows up in homes, fashion, food, and everyday moments. In coaching, we see that lasting transformation happens when people live from a secure identity—not from outcomes. Performances rise and fall; identity anchors.
"You are God's workmanship…" (Ephesians 2:10)
3) Tradition x Innovation: modernise without losing your soul
From technical partnerships to merchandising moves, the story demonstrated a delicate dance: evolve boldly and keep your essence. Healthy leaders do the same—adopt new tools, but keep core convictions intact. Growth that requires you to abandon who you are will hollow you out.
"Stand firm… hold to the traditions that you were taught." (2 Thessalonians 2:15)
4) Engagement is oxygen (be where your people live)
Branches across the country, family zones on match day, mobile connectivity, and on-the-ground activations—this is what love looks like operationalised. In life and leadership, engagement means presence: showing up consistently where your people actually are, not only where you wish they were.
"The Word became flesh and dwelt among us." (John 1:14)
5) Resilience through wilderness seasons
A trophyless decade would break many organisations. Instead, the brand chose to deepen loyalty, leverage story, and keep serving supporters. Likewise, our valleys are not vacancies; they are classrooms. Character, clarity, and capacity are forged where applause is quiet.
"Suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope." (Romans 5:3–4)
6) Global story, local soul
The strategy is unmistakable: think globally, remain unmistakably African, and honour community. For individuals and SMEs alike, this is wisdom—build for scale without severing your roots. Authenticity is not the enemy of excellence; it's the engine.
"Remain in me… apart from me you can do nothing." (John 15:4–5)
7) Love as the true currency
Jessica described a brand that sells belonging and measures success in love and peace, not just wins. In our work, love is the most disruptive strategy we know—it heals teams, strengthens families, and outlasts hype cycles.
"Above all… put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony." (Colossians 3:14)
Reflect & Apply (a MINDSHIFTERS mini-practice)
A. Vision audit (10 minutes):
-
Write your 2-sentence "why." What future are you building—at home and at work?
-
Name one courageous decision you've been avoiding that aligns with that why.
B. Identity anchors:
-
List three truths about who you are that are not tied to performance.
-
Share them with someone you trust; ask them to hold you accountable to live from them.
C. Soulful innovation:
-
Identify one practice or tool you'll adopt this month—and one core value you will not compromise while adopting it.
D. Presence plan:
-
Where do your people "live" (physically and digitally)? Choose two places you will show up consistently for the next 30 days.
E. Resilience ritual:
-
Create a simple weekly rhythm: Scripture (5 min), Reflection (5 min), Reach-out (send one encouraging message). Small acts compound.
A short prayer
Lord, give us vision that serves people, identity that steadies us, and love that outlasts outcomes. Teach us to innovate without losing our soul, to engage with humility, and to build legacies that heal homes, teams, and communities. Amen.
